●PRINT● PROCESSION SPIN giclée print

Tsutaya bookstore has released a 250 copies limited edition high-definition giclée print of Katsuhiro Otomo's original artwork created for the design of the ceramic relief PROCESSION SPIN installed as a public artwork at at Tokyo’s Ginza Station back in December 2025.

From Jōmon-era pottery and Buddhist statues to contemporary forms and futuristic imagery, various expressions created by humanity are arranged within one great flowing continuum. The work expresses the continuous chain of human creativity extending from the present into the future, as the thoughts and prayers embedded in each era are transformed and passed down over time.

TWEETS by OTOMO (Sep 5~7, 2025)

■I was too busy and couldn’t make it in time for the Tokyo event. I’m sorry to those who came to the Tokyo exhibition. Drawing stickers is quite a task.

■(Regarding availability) It seems they’re making T-shirts.

■I think there’s online shopping available. It hasn’t arrived in time for the Osaka venue either. Check the official website for details!

■The choice of stickers is based on old racing car materials. 1980s materials.

■(Regarding the omission of the Canon sticker) I just forgot.

■This was hand-painted with markers. It was tough because the color I wanted to use was dried up.

■These are Copics from about 10 years ago. About half of them have dried up. But I’ve restocked the colors I use often, so it’s fine.

■Copics contain pigments, so they don’t fade easily. Direct sunlight is a no-go, though. Probably.

■(On the use of analog drawing) Of course. I don’t trust digital. There’s no point in looking at a printout (copy), right? If you’re going to look, it’s got to be the real thing.

■If you look closely, it’s blurred and goes beyond the lines. Please don’t look too closely. I haven’t fixed it with Photoshop or anything because doing so would make it no longer the original artwork.

■(With respect to his attendance at the event) That is a body double.

■(On how color differs when printing) Thank you for your hard work, as always. That’s just how prints are. That’s why the master becomes important

TWEETS by OTOMO (June 26, 2024)

■A poster announcing the start of pre-orders for the second series of the complete collection has been made. Pre-orders will probably start next month. This image is my own pre-order. Please don't criticize me.

■These are some of the things I was influenced by when I was a high school freshman in 1970, until I was around 20 years old. Even though I only drew pictures, the rights issues were a real pain...

■(On the meaning of ELSINORE that it's written in the back of his shirt) This is a Honda off-road bike. This is the series that became a hot topic because it was the first time Steven McQueen appeared in a commercial. I wanted this T-shirt so I went to a motorcycle shop in Ueno to buy one.

■(Regarding the poster of BRING ME THE HEAD OF ALFREDO GARCIA) It is amazing! I remember being deeply influenced by this film that I saw in Sendai when I was a high school student.

■(Regarding the third image starting from the bottom left) This is THE RITE OF SPRING conducted by Leonard Bernstein. This is the record version.

■(On the mention made to THE DAY THE FISH CAME OUT  in the afterword of the complete collection) Michael. Cacoyannis was great in ZORBA.  And the music by Mikis Theodorakis, who did the music for Z  is also great.

■ (On filmmaker Yoshishige Yoshida  (吉田喜重)) I didn't really understand Yoshishige Yoshida's EROS+ MASSACRE (エロス+虐殺), but I found the TV Man Union's (テレビマンユニオン) THE EMPEROR'S CENTURY (天皇の世紀) interesting.

●ILLUSTRATION● POSTER for EINSTEIN ON THE BEACH

Director and choreographer Shintaro Hirahara (平原慎太郎) offered Katsuhiro Otomo to illustrate the poster of the avant-garde opera "Einstein on the Beach", in which minimal music master Philip Glass and director Robert Wilson attempted to interpret the scientist Albert Einstein poetically back in 1976.

OTOMO'S COMMENTS

Why did you get the offer?
The image came from the title "Einstein on the Beach".
I wanted to paint a picture of the sea.

In producing the illustration
It was hard because it was my first painting in a long time.

Vol.21: Animation AKIRA Storyboards 1

This book is the first volume out of two, of a huge amount of storyboards drawn by Otomo himself during the production process of  the anime version o AKIRA. Originally published also as two separate volumes by the editorial department of Young Magazine in 1988, both volumes AKIRA E-KONTE 1 (アキラ 絵コンテ集 1) and AKIRA E-KONTE 2 (アキラ 絵コンテ集 2) have been out of print for a long time and are difficult to obtain these days.

Storyboards are often thought of as rough blueprints, but the precision of the AKIRA storyboards is something else. Otomo drew them around 1987 when he was in the middle of the serialization of the fifth volume of the manga AKIRA. Work that he had to interrupt for 17 months to fully focus on the production of the movie version.

AKIRA storyboards are drawn with the tension of the serialization period and the dynamic feeling of the characters are at a level comparable to the main story of the manga. This book collects the  first half, parts  A and B  out of the four parts, A, B, C, and D that the movie is formed of. This large volume of nearly 500 pages is like reading the movie, the animation will be reproduced in the readers brain just by looking at it providing a unique insight to Otomo's animation production techniques.

●ILLUSTRATION● INUGASHIMA (犬ヶ島) Japanese Poster

Katsuhiro Otomo has created a special version of the poster for the Japanese release of ISLE OF DOGS (犬ヶ島) the latest stop-motion animation movie directed by Wes Anderson.

OTOMO'S COMMENT

“When I first saw Isle of Dogs, I thought it might be difficult to make a poster that would add something to the movie...It is filled with homage to Japanese cinema, including music directly from Kurosawa, and seemed fully realized already, with all its details in place. It was its own complete world. Then I had an idea: to paint a very traditional Japanese dog to represent the island itself, and a very traditional Japanese wooden floor as the sea. I hope my drawing will be a meaningful way to help share this film with the world.”

The illustration was featured in the cover of WEEKLY MORNING No.25 to promote the manga of Isle of Dogs and was later included in the book that covers the making of of the movie  written by Lauren Wilford and  Ryan Stevenson with illustration by Max Dalton and introductions by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou. Foreword by Matt Zoller Seitz and with contributions by director Wes Anderson.

●ILLUSTRATION● INSIDE BABEL

Katsuhiro Otomo has collaborated with collage artist Kosuke Kawamura  (河村康輔)  in a digital illustration that reinterprets  the classic painting THE TOWER OF BABEL painted by Pieter Brueghel in the year 1568 and exhibited in the Museum BVB, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The digital print that measures 90 × 110.5 cm will be  shown in the upcoming exhibition Collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Bruegel's "The Tower of Babel"  and the 16th masters - Beyond the Boss  (ボイマンス美術館所蔵 ブリューゲル「バベルの塔」展 16世紀ネーデルラントの至宝 ― ボスを超えて ―) that will take place in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (東京都美術館) from April 18, 2017 to July 2, 2017 and in the National Museum of Art (国立国際美術館) from July 18 2017 to October 15, 2017.

Otomo, who lists Brueghel as one of his favorite painters, decided to reinterpred the painting focusing on the internal structure of the Tower of Babel. Prior to the production, he visited the Boijmans Museum of Art in Rotterdam and planned the idea after exchanging opinions with the museum curators. The coloring of the work was handled by Kosuke Kawamura, a collage artist who has collaborated with Otomo before. They used a digital collage method to synthesize the hand-drawn sketches by Otomo into the original painting and then paste over 20,000 small parts from all over the tower's painting.
