Today has been released in the Japanese theaters, MUSHISHI (蟲師) the las live action movie directed by Katsuhiro Otomo. This is the first live action movie directed by Katsuhiro Otomo since WORLD APARTMENT HORROR (ワールド・アパートメント・ホラー) in 1991. Mushishi is based on a manga with the same name by Yuki Urushibara (漆原 友紀) that was published in Kodansha's Afternoon magazine from 1999 to August 2008.

Katsuhiro Otomo has written and directed GUNDAM: MISSION TO THE RISE (ガンダム ミッション・トゥ・ザ・ライズ), a CG animation short film premiered at Gundam Big Bang Proclamation event that took place on August 1, 1998 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the GUNDAM franchise. The conceptual drawings by Otomo are collected in the book KABA 2. The short film was included in the DVD ROAD TO STEAMBOY.

Roujin Z (老人Z) was released theatrically today in Japan. This animation movie directed by Hiroyuki Kitakubo (北久保 弘之) was is an original story by Katsuhiro Otomo (大友 克洋) who was as well in charge of the script and the mechanical designs that featured in the movie. Those designs are collected in the pages 110 to 115 of the art book KABA 2. The story was also adapted to manga with the title ZeD.

Today it was premiered in this year's Tōkyō International Fantastic Film Festival, MANIE-MANIE MEIKYU MONOGATARI (MANIE-MANIE 迷宮物語). An omnibus project in which directors Yoshiaki Kawajiri (川尻 善昭), Rintaro (りんたろう) and Kastuhiro Otomo (大友 克洋)  have collaborated with three short films. Other than festival screenings the film was directly released in video format in October 10, 1987. Later on April 15, 1989 it was released  theatrically in Japan. The 50 minute long project consisted on three short films: HASHIRU OTOKO (走る男), LABYRITH (ラビリンス) and KOUJI CHUUSHI MEIREI (工事中止命令 ) this last one written and directed by Katsuhiro Otomo.
