Katsuhiro Otomo (age 16) received a honorable mention in the February issue of COM (コム) magazine for his manga UMI GA..... (海が……). A single page of the manga was printed in small size in the magazine.

17 year old Katsuhiro Otomo participated again in Ribon Comic (りぼんコミック) magazine's manga competition under the pen name Fumiko Otomo (大友文子). He got an honorable mention and a thumbnail of the cover page was published in 1971 January issue of the magazine.
