●EVENT● HYPEFEST 2018: A.D.2019 AKIRA ART WALL CALENDAR


 

Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura have attended the HYPEFEST celebrated on October 6-7, 2018 in Brooklyn, New York. A limited edition AKIRA calendar for the 2019 calendar year was available at the event featuring the collages created by Kawamura with Otomo's AKIRA manga that were previously seen in the streets of Tokyo, as a mural covering the wall of SHIBUYA PARCO construction site. 


The  “A.D.2019 AKIRA ART WALL CALENDAR” was available in the AKIRA ART PROJECT TYO/NYC AKIRA ART WALL installment, made in collaboration with GR8 and Gallery X by Parco. Originally sold at Hypefest in New York on October 6-7, The calendar came with an exclusive serial number, special packaging, and a bonus AKIRA sticker. One day later on October 8th it was released in a one-day sale event in  GALLERY X BY PARCO in Shibuya, Tokyo with a bonus Pin Badge.

Katsuhiro Otomo has created a special version of the poster for the Japanese release of ISLE OF DOGS (犬ヶ島) the latest stop-motion animation movie directed by Wes Anderson.

OTOMO'S COMMENT
“When I first saw Isle of Dogs, I thought it might be difficult to make a poster that would add something to the movie...It is filled with homage to Japanese cinema, including music directly from Kurosawa, and seemed fully realized already, with all its details in place. It was its own complete world. Then I had an idea: to paint a very traditional Japanese dog to represent the island itself, and a very traditional Japanese wooden floor as the sea. I hope my drawing will be a meaningful way to help share this film with the world.”


The illustration was featured in the cover of WEEKLY MORNING No.25 to promote the manga of Isle of Dogs and was later included in the book that covers the making of of the movie  written by Lauren Wilford and  Ryan Stevenson with illustration by Max Dalton and introductions by Taylor Ramos and Tony Zhou. Foreword by Matt Zoller Seitz and with contributions by director Wes Anderson.

●INTERVIEW● SUPREME X AKIRA



The fashion brand SUPREME and Katsuhiro Otomo will collaborate in this fall winter collection that features original drawings from the manga AKIRA. Supreme has interviewed Otomo and he has share some insights on the creation of AKIRA. The collection will drop online and at Supreme’s New York, Brooklyn, LA, London and Paris locations November 2, and will hit Japanese stores on November 4. The collection will include T-shirts, pull overs, pants, hats, diverse accesories and skate boards featuring Tetsuo, Kaneda and company.  Today also, AKIRA was released  in the US in a brand new 35th ANNIVERSARY BOX-SET in english language.


Otomo's comments on AKIRA
How I got to do AKIRA is a very long story. I told the publisher I was doing a science fiction story. The publisher opposed but eventually ran my sci-fi piece. It had a good response. When I did Fire Ball I was given 50 pages. 50 pages was far from enough... I wanted to tell that story right and that became AKIRA.

In the story Tetsuo takes drugs. He becomes so self-destructive that he loses himself. Young people go berserk on impulse and eventually destroy themselves. It's about motorcycle gangs, rock musicians and punk rockers. You know how they all die young. I wanted it to be about the marginal members of society. It's society's outsiders, those who don't belong, who are more intriguing to draw.

Like we did, young people today should find their own way. It's not for us to say. They wound't listed to us anyway. That's how it goes.

The talk took place in the exhibition THE MACH55GO WORKS 55x20 which collets the work of Toshiaki Uesugi over 20 years. The exhibition opened its doors on september 23rd in Gallery X BY PARCO in Shibuya and will be open until October 1st, 2017.

    Milan Records has released today "AKIRA - Symphonic Suite", this version is is an analog record based on the master of the high resolution version "Symphonic Suite AKIRA 2016 Hyper High Resolution Edition" released in Japan in download only digital format in 2016. The soundtrack will be released as a double LP  in two different presentations, a  180 gram black vinyl and 150 gram transparent clear vinyl with red splatter. Both editions will include download cards for digital booklets that will feature  a commentary with the composer Shoji Yamashiro.     ●EXHIBITION● TRIBUTE TO OTOMO (トリビュート 大友克洋)




    Tower Records has organized an exhibition featuring the artwork collected in the book TRIBUTE TO OTOMO that pays omage to Katsuhiro Otomo's career. The book is an extended edition of the catalogue of the homonym exhibition that took place in the 'Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême' back in 2016. Artist such as Masamune Shirow, Masakazu Katsura, Tsutomu Nihei and Katsuya Terada pay tribute to Otomo in this exhibition and his illustrations can be purchased as t-shirt and as other kinds of merchandise too.

    The exhibition will take place from june 3 to 18, 2017 in the SpaceHACHIKAI on the eighth floor of the Tower Records Building ( タワーレコード渋谷店) in Tokyo. Entry will be 800¥.
