PIE International has published today a set of 20 Katsuhiro Otomo poster reprints. Eighteen of the 20 posters included in the folder will be reproduced in B3 (353 x 500 mm) size and the AKIRA 1 and ROCK MONSTER STRIKES BACK/EXTRA are B1 (707 x 1000 mm) size and folded. PIE will release next month an english version of the set with identical characteristics.

●EXHIBITION● TRIBUTE TO OTOMO (トリビュート 大友克洋)




Tower Records has organized an exhibition featuring the artwork collected in the book TRIBUTE TO OTOMO that pays omage to Katsuhiro Otomo's career. The book is an extended edition of the catalogue of the homonym exhibition that took place in the 'Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême' back in 2016. Artist such as Masamune Shirow, Masakazu Katsura, Tsutomu Nihei and Katsuya Terada pay tribute to Otomo in this exhibition and his illustrations can be purchased as t-shirt and as other kinds of merchandise too.

The exhibition will take place from june 3 to 18, 2017 in the SpaceHACHIKAI on the eighth floor of the Tower Records Building ( タワーレコード渋谷店) in Tokyo. Entry will be 800¥.

Kosuke Kawamura (河村康輔) and Katsuhiro Otomo will collaborate once again, this time covering with art the Shibuya PARCO Construction site, in Tokyo. Starting today and until the end of construction works in the summer 2019, Otomo's images collaged by Kawamura will cover the whole construction site wall. The events in AKIRA are set in a future Neo-Tokyo in the year 2019.

●EVENT● 'THE TOWER OF BABEL' EXHIBITION



Today opened its doors the exhibition "The Tower of Babel" and the 16th masters - Beyond the Boss (ボイマンス美術館所蔵 ブリューゲル「バベルの塔」展 16世紀ネーデルラントの至宝 ― ボスを超えて ―)  in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (東京都美術館) and will be opened to public until July 2, 2017.

Katsuhiro Otomo's INSIDE BABEL collaborative reinterpretation of the classic painting THE TOWER OF BABEL painted by Pieter Brueghel will be on display in the entrance. Otomo's work is a cross-section of the tower imagining how it would be from the inside. Two versions of the digital illustration are presented in the exhibition, one respecting the overall mood of the painting and the other one enhancing the cut-out section to highlight  the interior for better appreciation of details.



Otomo's hand drawn work-in-progress illustrations are  also on display at the exhibition. Both the digital painting and the hand drawn illustrations reproduction, as well as t-shirts (¥2.800) and tote bags (¥4.500) will be available at the museum store during the exhibition period and online at the Asahi Store.

A limited to 150 signature edition of the illustration signed by Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura is also available in the Asahi Store with a retail price of ¥85,000.

Katsuhiro Otomo and Kosuke Kawamura unveiled today to the media their last collaboration INSIDE BABEL. Asahi Shinbun covers the news with a video of the press conference and a sneak peak inside Otomo's studio.

Katsuhiro Otomo has collaborated with collage artist Kosuke Kawamura  (河村康輔)  in a digital illustration that reinterprets  the classic painting THE TOWER OF BABEL painted by Pieter Brueghel in the year 1568 and exhibited in the Museum BVB, Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

The digital print that measures 90 × 110.5 cm will be  shown in the upcoming exhibition Collection of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen Bruegel's "The Tower of Babel"  and the 16th masters - Beyond the Boss  (ボイマンス美術館所蔵 ブリューゲル「バベルの塔」展 16世紀ネーデルラントの至宝 ― ボスを超えて ―) that will take place in the Tokyo Metropolitan Art Museum (東京都美術館) from April 18, 2017 to July 2, 2017 and in the National Museum of Art (国立国際美術館) from July 18 2017 to October 15, 2017.

Otomo, who lists Brueghel as one of his favorite painters, decided to reinterpred the painting focusing on the internal structure of the Tower of Babel. Prior to the production, he visited the Boijmans Museum of Art in Rotterdam and planned the idea after exchanging opinions with the museum curators. The coloring of the work was handled by Kosuke Kawamura, a collage artist who has collaborated with Otomo before. They used a digital collage method to synthesize the hand-drawn sketches by Otomo into the original painting and then paste over 20,000 small parts from all over the tower's painting.

The 1983 animation film series CRUSHER JOE (クラッシャージョウ) was released in Japan in a Blu-ray box set that collects the original movie and various OVAs, all based on a science fiction novel series published back in 1977 written by Haruka Takachiho (高千穂 遙) . The movie is the first directorial work by Yoshikazu Yasuhiko (安彦 良和), who is widely known as one of the creators of Gundam. ●TALK● KATSUHIRO OTOMO ON THE WORLD OF BANDE DESSINÉE (大友克洋が語るバンドデシネの世界)


Katsuhiro Otomo has talk about Bande Desinee or french comics in a event organized by Kinokuniya book stores thta took place in Shinjuku's 8-floor event space. There was space for 25 attendants and the price was ¥3,000.

Otomo is known to have been influenced hugely by french comics, he has  mentioned many times in interviews the appreciation he has for the work of french artist Moebius among others. The appreciation from the french public is reciproque as in 2015 he was awarded with the grand price on the  'Festival International de la Bande Dessinée d’Angoulême' and next year he attended as special guest and gave a master class. He has also been honored with  Officier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Govermnet.

The second issue of Pandora, a collection of comics that is published in France by Casterman features the last comic work by Katsuhiro Otomo, WARUI ROBOTTO MO KOWARETA JIGOKU E IKU NO? (悪いロボットも壊れたら地獄へ行くの？) originaly published in Geijutsu Shincho (芸術新潮) in June in a number mainly dedicated to Otomo and the french comics or bande dessinée.
