Futabasha has republished SHORT PEACE (ショート・ピース), previously published by Kisōtengaisha in 1979; the first book that collected Katsuhiro Otomo's short stories originally published in various magazines from 1976 to 1978. This new edition is larger in size and pages count as it includes an extra story not included in the previous edition. At the end of the book there is a detailed list of every comic published by Otomo from his debut in 1973 to February 1983.

BOOK DETAILSThis book, SHORT PEACE is a reprint of a volume originally published in March 1979 (Showa 54) by the now-defunct Kisōtengaisha.
In truth, I had planned to publish it exactly as it was, but the editorial department said, “We’d at least like to make the format a bit larger,” and “If it’s going to be larger, the page count won’t be enough, so we’ll need to add another piece.” In that case, I replied, “Then I’d like to keep the two-color pages as they are.” To which the editors responded, “Because of printing constraints, the order will differ from the original edition”… And so, with no end to people’s desires, we finally ended up even revising the cover.
Perhaps when you revisit and alter a book from seven years ago, it inevitably becomes somewhat grotesque—as this cover seems to reflect.
At the time, this was my first-ever collection of works, and I remember enjoying the whole process of making the book—choosing the design, the typesetting, and so on. Looking at it now, including the content and technique, it does feel rather immature in many ways. But then again, my present self is not so different… Those were short but happy days.
With that reflection in mind, please go ahead and read this Short Peace.
