The AKIRA film was officially announced and this month's ANIMAGE (アニメージュ) magazine dedicated four pages to Otomo's latest project whose production cost, including promotional expenses, is estimated at 1 billion yen and the number of cel animation frames used is expected to be 150,000. AKIRA will be written and directed by Otomo himself under the Akira Production Committee (アキラ製作委員会) formed by Kodansha (講談社), Mainichi Broadcasting System (毎日放送) , Bandai (バンダイ), Hakuhodo (博報堂), Laserdisc Corp. (レーザーディスク社), Toho (東宝) , Sumitomo Corporation (住友商事) and Tokyo Movie Shinsha (東京ムービー新社)
The magazine also features two pages focused on his previous animation project that marked Otomo's directorial debut in animation: Kōji Chūshi Meirei (工事中止命令) [ The Order to Stop Construction] a short film part of the omnibus animation project MANIE-MANIE Meikyū Monogatari (迷宮物語) released in 1987.
